Prof. Piotr Mydel, MD PhD
Piotr Mydel has spent his scientific career contributing mostly to the field of inflammation and autoimmune diseases. Currently, he holds a professor position at the Broegelmann Research Laboratory, Department of Clinical Science, University of Bergen and ant the Department of Microbiology, Jagiellonian University, Krakow. He established a very strong research group working in the field of translational medicine with a specific focus on host-pathogen interactions in chronic periodontitis and development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. His multidisciplinary approach (biochemistry, immunology, biomarkers), broad international collaborations with groups possessing complementary expertise to investigate inflammation and autoimmunity, and proven record of collaboration with industry partners (development of small molecular inhibitors, development of drug targets based on ‘omics’ datasets) has led to the series of discoveries that not only have a potential to be an important tools in medical field but also triggered the paradigm shift on the nature of one of the most devastating disease of modern society – Alzheimer Disease. He has a proven track record of attracting international and local funding (over 6 million Euro in the past 10 years, including 4 EU grants) that allow for the state-of-the art research at the University of Bergen. Apart from high quality research, he puts a lot of efforts in increasing awareness among the patients and medical professionals of impact of chronic periodontitis (CP, periodontitis) on the development and progression of chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer disease and various form of cancer. His efforts were awarded by multiple publication in popular magazines including bergens Tidende, NRK Schrödingers Katt, Ney York Post, Daily Mail etc.
